International Press Cartoon Contest 2025 France

Rules for the international press cartoon contest as part of the 2026 International Desertif'actions Summit and the United Nations International Year of "Pastoralism and Pastoral Peoples" in 2026.

Motivations and background: after "Land and drought" in Montpellier in 2012, "Earth and climate" in Montpellier in 2015, "Land and climate, time to act" in Strasbourg in 2017 and "Draw me the Great Green Wall" in Ouagadougou in 2019, the Desertif'actions 2026 Summit press cartoon contest is dedicated to the cause of pastoralism and pastoral peoples.

"Choosing the theme of pastoralism for a press cartoon competition means highlighting its richness and complexity, its roots in the history of the territories and its confrontation with the challenges and solutions for millions of people living on land and natural spaces that have not yet been artificially developed".
We invite designers to use their creativity and critical eye to explore the many facets of this lifestyle and the issues involved.

Article 1: Participants
The international press cartoon contest is an initiative of the organisers of the 6th International Désertif'actions 2026 Summit, to be held in Djerba (Tunisia) from 25 to 28 March 2026.

The competition is open to any cartoonist from any country who has published at least one cartoon in a print or online media since January 2025. Each cartoonist may submit only two drawings, in black and white or in color.

Article 2: Theme of the contest
For its 5th drawing competition, the organizers of Désertif'actions 2026 wanted to tackle a subject that is often neglected or controversial: pastoralism. And yet pastoralism is a huge issue for many countries and base of livelihoods in drylands.

The theme of the competition, "Pastoralism, mobility at the heart of a balance", invites press cartoonists to explore the complex and often delicate relationship between humans, animals and the environment facing changes. It can evoke:
• Mobility as a strategy for adapting to local ecological constraints and climate hazards.
• The beauty and serenity of the countryside: vast expanses, peaceful herds, the slow rhythm of the seasons... a striking contrast to the frenetic pace of the modern world.

• An ancestral way of life: traditions and know-how handed down from generation to generation, a deep and respectful bond with nature.
• Contemporary challenges: climate change (droughts, floods), pressure on land, cohabitation with wildlife, agricultural policies, economic profitability, the attractiveness of the profession to younger generations.

• Environmental issues: the role of grazing in maintaining landscapes, fire prevention and biodiversity, as well as the potential negative impacts of unsustainable management.
• Social and cultural aspects: Pastoralism as part of the identity of certain regions, conflicts of use, rural tourism.
• The figure of the farmer: An often-solitary figure, faced with the vagaries of nature and economic constraints, but also the guardian of knowledge and a special bond with his animals.

• Animal welfare: The question of rearing conditions and respect for animals in an extensive system.

The Press Drawing angle

As the subject of a press cartoon competition, pastoralism offers fertile ground for humour, satire, social criticism and awareness-raising. The drawings could deal with:
• The gap between the idyllic image and the sometimes harsh reality of the profession.
• The contradictions between public policies and society's expectations of livestock farming.
• The absurdities of certain situations linked to regulations or conflicts of use.
• Highlighting the crucial issues for the future of pastoralism.
• Endearing or caricatured characters representing the various players in the pastoral world.
